CSDA Demo at Track Trek

CSDA was invited to demonstrate the tracking skills of our dogs at this year’s Family Day Track Trek at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre in Lethbridge on February 20, 2012. Cindy and K9 Ruger showed off the team’s tracking ability and gave the audience an appreciation of how wild animals like coyotes, foxes and wolves can track down their prey. Chris, with K9 Piper, explained why dogs have natural skills to track and entertained many questions from the audience about CSDA and our dogs.

Members of the Edmonton region got together today for some last minute training before the forecasted deep freeze hits tomorrow. We managed to get a few hours in before the snow started falling.

Yesterday CSDA members participated in a search in Southern Alberta. Global News and the Lethrbridge Herald carried the following stories:

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - 2012 is off to a warm start, but while some southern Albertans are happy about the lack of winter weather, it may have contributed to the death of a man near Indian Battle Park.

On Monday a cadaver-trained search dog scoured the hill leading into the park after a body was found.

2011 Training Seminar

CSDA members had the opportunity to attend a 2 day Wilderness and Cadaver training session in Lethbridge this past weekend. The instructor, Deborah Palman, has over 30 years experience in the wilderness K-9 search and rescue field from the ground search level to the organization and planning of searches. One of the highlights was her lecture on distance alerts/long distance scent transport.

Water Training

CSDA members from the southern region had their first water work sessions on Saturday and Sunday. This is probably the latest start to the water season they have ever had. Sunday featured high winds and high waves in some very cold mountain water. They couldn’t quite do what they had planned, but the dogs got in some challenging swimming and fun with the diver.

Pets in the Park

On Sunday, the Edmonton Region CSDA had a booth set up at the annual Humane Society’s Pets in the Park. Thanks to all the volunteers and their dogs who helped greet the visitors and talk to them about CSDA and what we do.
